Seniors Outreach & Resource Centre - Kelowna

Provided by Seniors Outreach & Resource Centre

Provides a variety of social services for seniors and family caregivers to enhance their sense of belonging, independence, and well-being. While they advocate for all seniors, they have a strong focus on supporting older adults living with vulnerabilities in Kelowna and region.
Information & Navigation Supports: Supporting older adults 60+ years and their care partners with information, referrals, and system navigation for needed government services and community resources. They can provide help over the phone, virtually, or meet in-person. They can assist with application forms, online submissions, correspondence, and personal support.

At Home Support Services - Better at Home is designed to assist seniors aged 65+ years and above with managing their day-to-day tasks, ensuring they maintain their independence while staying connected to their communities. Home supports are non-medical in nature and include light housekeeping, grocery assistance, light yard work, minor home repairs, transportation, snow removal, and friendly visits. Services are tailored to individual needs, with services offered on a sliding-scale rate based on income for their contracted home services. There are no fees for services delivered by volunteers.

Community Connector unlocks the potential of social prescribing by connecting seniors to a variety of local programs to improve their health. Physicians and health professionals can refer older patients to our initiative, knowing our Community Connector will then link individuals with local services and activities tailored to enhance their health and wellbeing. Whether it’s nutritional services, social opportunities, physical activity, arts activities, or mental health supports, their social prescriptions aim to foster improved health and social connections

Social Recreation Programs – the Seniors’ Activity Center provides a variety of affordable social recreation opportunities in a welcoming environment. The programs are possible thanks to the wisdom and generosity of senior volunteers who host activities. For a nominal membership fee, participants can enjoy social activities organized by our members and small associations that rent space for their activities. Member-run programs include bingo, bridge, mahjong, coffee club, and dancing.

Seniors Housing Information & Navigation with Ease – SHINE supports seniors, who are experiencing housing precarity, to secure stable housing that is appropriate and safe. While we do not directly provide housing, our SHINE Housing Navigator offers invaluable support in accessing BC Housing resources, securing SAFER rent subsidies, and reviewing eligibility for government supports. The Housing Navigator can also help clients with their housing search, tenant applications, review of lease terms and home set-up. Depending on a client’s situation, the program has limited funds to help with transitions: moving costs; damage deposits; first month rent etc.

Community Volunteer Tax Program: A free tax clinic, staffed by trained volunteers, that assists older adults with modest incomes and simple tax situations in filing their returns. Maximizing the financial well-being of seniors. Must be 60+ year of age (55+ if disabilities).

More Than Meals aims to bolster the food security and social connections of vulnerable seniors in the Central Okanagan. Services can include prepared meals, produce hampers, emergency food hampers; delivery of hampers from local food bank, and distributing coupons for our local farmer’s market

Senior Contact Program provides brief, daily phone calls to ensure the well-being and safety of vulnerable seniors living alone and who do not have a caregiver or someone to check or visit them on a daily basis.
