The Roots: The program was developed as a response to the fact that almost half of the children and youth in the care of the BC Ministry of Children and Family Development (MCFD) are Aboriginal. The Roots worker collaborates with other services and programs within MCSBC in order to facilitate increased connections between Metis children and their families, community, and culture.
Peetigway Famii Program: a weekly drop-in program for Aboriginal families with children aged 0-6 years. It is based on the teachings of the Medicine Wheel, with cultural activities, drumming, guest speakers, workshops, parenting support, music, stories, family outings, and more.
Family Preservation Program: promotes the safety and well-being of Metis children and families, as well as the preservation of family unity where children's safety can be supported.
Aboriginal Supported Childhood Development Program: ASCD is a family-centred and culturally-relevant program intended to support Aboriginal children who require extra support due to a developmental delay or disability in a physical, cognitive, communicative, social, emotional, and behavioural area.
Family Support Worker: works closely with the Family Preservation Worker and MCFD Social Workers to help promote a positive and healthy lifestyle.
Aboriginal Infant Development Program: The Aboriginal Infant Development Program assists families with children who may be at risk of developmental delays. This age is the most important time in a baby's growth and development.
Trauma Therapy: provides urban Metis teens and adults with therapeutic support, tools, and resources to promote and foster a healthy Metis system, in a wrap-around style of service.
Child Trauma Play Therapy: This program uses a combination of mainly play and art-trauma therapy, as well as supportive, ego-strengthening cognitive-behavioural and insight-orientated approaches.
Mental Health & Substance Use Counselling: Counsellors use evidence-based therapeutic approaches to help clients develop coping strategies, manage triggers, and build resilience. The ultimate goal is to improve overall mental health and quality of life while supporting clients in their journey toward recovery from substance use.
Metis Health and Wellness Coordinator: provides support to Metis adults and children in Central Okanagan in accessing timely services by Interior Health. They identify and remove barriers to treatment while addressing the language, culture, and spiritual needs of their Metis patients.
Family Cultural Support: The support worker provides an opportunity for MCSBC-involved families to learn about Metis culture, history, and heritage.
