Canadian Prenatal Nutrition Program - Vanderhoof and Saik'uz area

Provides support to families who are expecting, Aboriginal parents with babies less than 12 months of age, and non-Aboriginal parents with babies of less than 7 months of age. For families living in the Vanderhoof and Saik'uz area.
The Canadian Prenatal Nutrition Program (CPNP) provides support to families who are expecting babies or parents with babies less than 7 months of age through home visits, hospital visits, and one-to-one support. CPNP is funded by the Public Health Agency of Canada. All CPNP services are provided free of charge.

The goals are to increase the number of babies born at a healthy birth weight and improve the health of the mother and infant through nutrition and support. They provide opportunities to access necessary resources and provide unbiased information. Support is offered by:
  • Providing support through dieticians, nursing, family workers and peers, prenatal health counselling, breast feeding education, and referrals to other agencies.
  • The program features a Mom's Group that runs two days a week, Monday at 10am and Thursday at 3:30pm, which takes place at the Neighbourhood building in Vanderhoof or visits in the family's home.
  • Providing traditional activities such as moccasin making, cradle boards, language classes, traditional cooking, and drumming.
Referral Process:
  • The referral process can be made by a Public Health Nurses, Physicians, Community Service Providers, guardians, and family members or via self-referral.
  • Eligible participants include Indigenous families who are expecting, aboriginal parents with less than 12 months old babies, or non-indigenous parents with babies of less than 7 months of age.
  • For Indigenous families once the child turns 12 months of age, the families are either discharged from the program or referred to the Infant Development Program or Supported Child Development Program, if needed. Same applies for non-indigenous families, once the child turns 7 months of age.
